This week, our President returned to his former school, Marist College Ashgrove, to deliver an ANZAC Day address, twenty years after he last gave the address then as a serving Army Major. In sharing his journey, he reflected on the defining experiences that shaped his life: multiple deployments to Timor-Leste, working alongside the Timorese people during times of crisis, and later serving in the inner circle of President José Ramos-Horta.

He spoke openly about the invisible wounds carried by so many veterans, including himself - PTSD, depression, anxiety, and the long road back from darkness. His message to the students was clear: courage is not only found on battlefields. The highest form of courage is moral courage, the daily choice to be kind, humble, compassionate, and willing to ask for help.

He reminded them that this same courage is what saves lives today. It’s what inspired the creation of Veterans Care Association and Timor Awakening, programs that continue to help veterans heal, reconnect, and rediscover purpose. After returning only the night before from Timor-Leste (TA37), he shared that our work remains as vital as ever. His closing remarks…

“The ANZACs we remember today, and soldiers of all wars, did not fight for glory. They fought so that future generations could live in peace and freedom and could choose to live with courage and compassion.

I take this opportunity to honour good friends who died recently. Timor-Leste and Afghanistan Veteran, WO2 Scott John McAndrew (3 RAR Para), and Vietnam Veteran Major John Ernest Duckett White DSC MID. Both were combat veterans and Australian heroes. Men of the highest character. Both spent their last years with acute illness yet continued to care for and serve others, especially veterans.

Now for my final thoughts. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to be the best at sport, or top of the class, or the one standing on this stage. But at some point, you’re going to be faced with a choice, again and again, between what’s easy and what’s hard. And I can tell you from experience… it’s the harder road that shapes you. It builds something in you, resilience, confidence, belief, that you can’t get any other way. So, when that moment comes, and it will, back yourself. Choose the harder path…. And see where it takes you. Because the person sitting where you are right now… might end up somewhere you can’t even imagine yet. Please never forget to laugh, have fun, explore and take time out.

Today, as we honour the fallen and all who have served, including those who continue to serve in silence, I ask each of you to take our motto to heart:

Viriliter Age……. Act Courageously

Not just with physical bravery when it is required, but every single day with moral courage; with strength, under control, with empathy, with humility, with integrity, with kindness and respect, with honour, with compassion and forgiveness, beginning with yourself.

Once an Ashgrovian, always an Ashgrovian.

May you carry that spirit forward, in our school, in your families, in your teams and tribes, in Timor-Leste, in your future lives, and in every community you touch.

ANZAC DAY 2026 – a Veterans view

I will pray for a peace in the world and amongst Australians, then along with veteran colleagues, we will march through Brisbane as “Veterans Peacemakers,” hoping our witness inspires all Australians to promote and live in peace, and be ready to risk their

lives to restore it when threatened” …

Dear friends, peace be with you.

On 25 April every year we gather to remember and pray for those who have given their lives in service and sacrifice in the cause of peace. It is our pre-eminent national commemoration and a day of national pride and unity. We also honour and re-dedicate ourselves to the ANZAC spirit of courage, commitment, service, mateship, and compassion.

This year’s commemoration is bittersweet for me and some veteran colleagues. We witness ongoing conflict and suffering in the Middle East, and are bewildered by the unjust actions of the President of our long-term US ally. Divisive Afghanistan war crimes trials also loom. These trigger emotional responses from the injustice and suffering we’ve seen, when we want to focus on the Goodness “ANZAC Day signifies: respectful remembrance of fallen comrades, promoting peace, and contributing daily to a better world.

ANZAC Day should remind our nation of the positive contributions of our troops in restoring peace in many regional conflicts. We can be proud of nearly 100 peacekeeping operations since World War II, albeit at a massive cost of lives lost or wounded. For us veterans, the wider Community celebration of ANZAC Day is vital, reminding veterans, many who still suffer, that their service and sacrifice is honoured and appreciated, and reminding our society that we went there on your behalf.

This year is particularly significant for me as I reflect on my peacemaking and peacekeeping service in the Iran-Iraq conflict (1989-90), where our dialogue and engagement restored peace that was sustained for 35 years. Recent merciless bombardments by regimes in Tel Aviv and Washington against Tehran, defy comprehension. As a trained tactician and strategist, now turned chaplain, my military colleagues and I are astounded by this catastrophic, illegal campaign with predictable

global impacts, especially on the poor.

Perhaps this ANZAC day speaks to us, as indeed Pope Leo has done in recent weeks: “Enough! Put down your swords. Stop dropping your bombs on innocent victims. Recognise our common humanity.”

The strategies used by some allies in Iraq and Afghanistan, and current actions by Israel and the US, contrast with how Australian troops handle conflict. We operate with minimum and discriminate use of force, maximum community engagement, “Just War “ principles, and a peaceful end state in mind. However, when paired with allies who do not conform to our behaviour, its perhaps inevitable there will be a few that “cross the line.”  Then according to our Laws, we justly hold to account those alleged to have breached these concepts. As an Australian veteran with 48 years in uniform and service in seven conflicts, and a friend of many American service people, I am over us being dragged into wars by US Governments whose values and strategies diverge from ours. Soldiers will implement what governments order, but I call on our people and politicians, when considering committing us to operations, that these embody the ANZAC spirit of courage, commitment, compassion, and common sense to stand up for RIGHT over wrong; LAW over chaos, COMPASSION over cruelty, and PEACE over war. Yes, we desire to be peacemakers, but never again commit us to operations without likelihood of strategic success or clear end states. Many veterans carry lifelong scars, from the hopelessness of missions that politicians and military hierarchy have thrust upon us.

I have written about war and peace before and am surprised by the silence in Australia. All Australians must play their part in promoting peace. My primary consolation comes from my faith which calls me to be peacemaker, and Pope Leo’s recent courageous echoes of the Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth:

“…Stop it. It’s time for peace; sit at a table of dialogue and mediation; listen and come together; stop killing and threatening each other with death; enough of the idolatry of self and money; enough of displays of power; enough of war; true strength is shown in serving life…”

Our veterans and much of the world echo these sentiments. We must be proactive to avoid repeating these mistakes.

For me, this year’s ANZAC Day is a poignant moment to promote and celebrate peace.

Our Creator desires peace among all humanity.  We are meant to be brothers and sisters in a universal society of love, joy, and care. Having mediated “toe to toe”, without a weapon, with angry armed extremists in Iran, and survived, I affirm that escalating violence is not the answer.  We have the right to defend ourselves, but must never see initiating violence as a solution.

As I pray at St Stephens Cathedral on 25 April, I will thank God for the good we have done. I will pray for a peace in the world and in Australia, that is free from bitterness, resentment, and violence. Along with veteran colleagues and my sons, we will march through Brisbane as “Veteran Peacemakers”, hoping our witness inspires all Australians to promote and live in peace and be ready to risk their lives to restore it when threatened.

Finally, may we be uplifted by Pope Leo’s Palm Sunday prayer: Send forth your Spirit, that promotes life over death and turns adversaries into brothers and sisters.

I’ve seen that can happen.

Peace is possible.

While our COO Roy has set sail to Hawaii with his fabulous wife for a well‑earned holiday, he and the team have wrapped up a huge first quarter for VCA. It’s been a strong start as we deliver programs and gear up for a busy mid‑year period.

Program Highlights • TA36 welcomed new mentors and providers on the Gold Coast in February. • TA37 wrapped up in Timor in April with excellent feedback from veterans and partners. • Planning is underway for TA38 Mentor Training and the shorter TA39 program in June (EOIs now closed).

Funding & Growth • We’ve secured around $332k for 2026 and are now about $200k short of our target, with sponsorship discussions progressing well. • EOIs for TA40 are expected to open around June. • We’re also exploring a Corporate User Pays model, with three positions already sponsored at $7k per participant.

A big start to the year with plenty more to come.

Across every Timor Awakening program, there’s often a turning point - a moment where something clicks, softens, or opens up. Participants come for many reasons, but most leave with something meaningful: improved wellbeing, a clearer direction, or a renewed sense of self.

In this edition, Brad and Garry offer a snapshot of their TA37 journey in Timor‑Leste. They reflect on what brought them to the program, the goals they carried, the challenges they’ve worked through since returning home, and the ways they’ve been able to use their experience to support others.

Their stories are a reminder that healing is built through courage, consistency, and community. We’re honoured to share their voices.

Timor - Leste Retreat Date: April 2026

Who am I and why I chose to attend

I am a veteran who served with INTERFET 26 years ago. Over that time, I carried many memories and emotions that I had long kept buried. Attending the Timor Awakening Program was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life, and I chose to go because I knew, deep down, there were parts of my service I had never fully processed.

Returning to Timor-Leste was something I felt both drawn to and challenged by. I was seeking understanding, healing, and a way to make peace with my past - while also reconnecting with the country and people who had left such a lasting impact on me.

My Health & Wellbeing Goals

My main goal was to confront and process the emotions I had been holding onto since my deployment in 1999-2000. I wanted to find a sense of peace, let go of lingering anger and unresolved feelings, and reconnect with a stronger sense of purpose. I also hoped to open myself up emotionally, allowing myself too fully experience the journey rather than continue to suppress what I had been carrying for so long.

Life After the Retreat

Since returning home, I feel lighter, more at ease, and with a renewed sense of meaning and direction. The experience has stayed with me in a profound way. I’ve been able to reflect on my service with greater understanding and compassion, rather than the weight I once carried. The program helped me shift my perspective from what I had subconsciously called “My Timor Trauma” to the beginning of a new chapter, “My Timor Awakening” - one built on purpose, positivity, and peace of mind.

I also carry a deep sense of gratitude, not only for my own healing but for being part of a program that is making a genuine difference in the lives of veterans and giving back to the Timor-Leste community.

Challenges & Wins

There were moments during the retreat that were extremely emotional and confronting. Facing long-held memories and feelings was not easy, and at times it felt overwhelming. However, being surrounded by fellow veterans/mentors who truly understood made it possible to move through those moments safely.

One of my biggest wins was allowing myself to fully feel and process those emotions rather than avoid them. Reconnecting with the people of Timor-Leste, alongside my wife and fellow veterans, was a powerful and healing experience that I will always carry with me.

Sharing this journey with my wife made it even more meaningful. Too often, we overlook or neglect the people who stand beside us through the ups and downs. Experiencing the program together gave us a deeper understanding of each other, strengthened our connection, and allowed her to better understand parts of my journey that are hard to put into words.

Above the line moment

An above the line moment for me was choosing to lean into the discomfort rather than step away from it. Instead of shutting down or pushing emotions aside, I stayed present, supported others, and allowed me to be supported in return -including by my wife, whose support throughout the journey meant more than I can express. That shift from avoidance to acceptance helped me reconnect with purpose, community, and a deeper sense of inner peace. It reminded me that while the journey isn’t always easy; it is absolutely worth it.

Who am I and why I chose to attend:

My name is Garry. I am a father to two young girls, a husband and a veteran of Timor-Leste serving there during the 2006-2007 crisis. I heard about Timor Awakening from a friend who attended and told me it changed his life and mindset which made me curios: what is this Awakening about? I wanted to reconcile the parts of my service in Timor I had no answer. Mostly though, I wanted to see how the country and it’s people had progressed and if they had found peace.

My Health & Wellbeing Goals

I wanted to return to Australia with gratitude, choosing to focus my energy not on anger or frustration, but on appreciation for the life I’m living and the people who are part of it. My aim is to support others in any way I can, as a way of honouring the incredible help and encouragement I received from my mentors and fellow TA participants. I had already begun my physical training, but TA gave me the boost I needed to stay motivated and committed in the gym.

Life After the Retreat

I am much calmer now than before I left for the retreat. I’ve gained a level of focus and resilience I didn’t have before coming on TA. I take each day as it comes and try not to sweat the small stuff.

Challenges & Wins

Returning to the daily routine and the fast, often pressured mindset back home in Australia was challenging at first. But the positivity, determination, and quiet strength of the Timorese people stayed with me. Their example has helped me stay the course in my own life.

My Pay-It-Forward Moment

Being present and accountable to my family has become one of my greatest priorities. I now have the resilience to face people, places, and situations that would have overwhelmed me before TA. Timor Awakening was truly life‑changing - it pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me embrace what life is really about… living!.

The TA37 Timor Awakening program began with several meaningful community engagements that set the tone for the retreat.

Daisula – The Veterans School Early in the program, the team visited Daisula, the Veterans School, where long‑time supporter Craig Thrupp was formally acknowledged for sponsoring the majority of the school’s operations. Craig received a personal tour and a warm welcome from the CCLN President and students. Our mentors spent time preparing food, dancing, singing, and sharing lessons with the students — a joyful and heartfelt start to the retreat that strengthened our connection with the community. Several participants have gone on to sponsor some of the students to assist with the costs associated with their education, food and accommodation.

Thank you Craig Thrupp for your continued support and the ongoing investment you make in assisting the young Timorese people thrive.

Opening of Sunset Inn – Pro‑Ema’s Latest Initiative TA37 was also honoured to be included in the official opening of Sunset Inn, the newest social enterprise developed by Pro‑Ema. The ceremony was officiated by His Excellency Dr José Ramos‑Horta, with our founder and long‑time Pro‑Ema supporter Michael Stone participating in the event. Being part of this milestone highlighted the deep and ongoing partnership between VCA, Pro‑Ema, and the communities we serve.

Following the completion of the TA37 program, several TA Mentors remained in Timor‑Leste to continue supporting our local partners.

Support for Pro‑Ema

Several TA Mentors remained to assist Pro‑Ema with construction works and essential maintenance of their vehicle fleet, helping strengthen the organisation’s capacity to deliver services to vulnerable women and families.

Urgent Medical Assistance for AHHA Student During this period, TA personnel liaised with Dr Belo after concerns were raised about the medical condition of a Same‑based AHHA student. The student was transported to Dili for assessment by a visiting Singaporean eye specialist. Should surgery be required, she will be flown to Singapore, where all medical and travel costs will be covered through our long‑standing relationship with SABEH. This may be a serious, potentially life‑threatening condition, and we are grateful for the swift action taken.

A special thank‑you to David Johnson for identifying the risk and working towards immediate care.

If you’d like to get involved with VCA, the first step is to join one of our programs as a participant.  This gives you a genuine feel for the program and helps us build a mentor team with real lived understanding.

Once you’ve completed a program, you’re welcome to put your hand up for future volunteer opportunities. As positions become available, we’ll reach out and give you as much notice as possible. We aim to let our volunteers know around six months in advance so you have plenty of time to plan, prepare, and be part of the VCA mentor team.

Our program gives veterans and their families the space to heal, rebuild, and reconnect through community. With your support, they’re finding their strength again and many are turning that strength into powerful acts of giving back.
